20: [Video/Action] Open Arms
Feb. 28th, 2011 09:24 pmDean is slumped in one of the easy chairs in his room, seemingly completely oblivious to the camera he's left on the bedside table. It's at enough of an angle that half his face is obscured by the shadows in the dimly-lit room, and the only sources of illumination are the floor lamp off in the far corner, and the soft electric glow of the radio's face.
The only thing it's been playing today are Journey's greatest hits, but it's been stuck on a loop of Faithfully and Open Arms, which made Dean think, and thinking is always a bad idea when he's convinced that he's fucked up almost every close friendship - or relationship - he's had with anyone since coming here.
Dean is starting to see a pattern, and if the expression of grim pain on his face isn't enough of a giveaway that something is wrong, then the beer bottle dangling from his fingertips over the left arm of the chair ought to be. Reaching down, he tugs off one of his heavy biker boots and chucks it at the radio, which clatters to the floor and fizzles out of whatever reception it was getting.
He knows he should be happier. His brother is here. Sam, Sasquatch that he is, is here - albeit older - the the guilt he feels over moping when he should be catching up with Sam is...really awful, actually.
But everyone has those days, right?
Right?

Date: 2011-03-12 06:47 pm (UTC)Dean swallows nervously, nodding. He doesn't recognize the advice as generic, fortunately, because Dean doesn't exactly read Cosmopolitan - nor did he ever receive such suggestions from his father - so everything Philip is saying, generalized or not, sounds great.
"Walking back" is easier said than done, though.]
Right. Okay. [For an instant, Dean wears an expression similar to one of his brother's: lost, and forlorn-like. Then it smoothes over with determination and he rubs his hand over his face. Chuckling weakly to himself, Dean looks back at Philip.]
You're not so bad at this advice thing, y'know? Were you a ladies' man back home?
[You can tell he's in better spirits when he goes back to humor.]
Woo them with your talk of gravity?
Date: 2011-03-13 05:07 pm (UTC)...Surprisingly no.
[ He smiles crookedly. It's hardly the impression Philip gives off and he knows it. He used to do okay with women back at home, but... ]
Theory always comes easier to me.
{ }
Date: 2011-03-13 06:40 pm (UTC)[Dean grins back just as crookedly, waggling his eyebrows.]
Date: 2011-03-14 02:47 am (UTC)Too bad I never visited.
[ Humour. It happens even to the most Philip of us. ]
Date: 2011-03-14 03:13 am (UTC)[Which reminds him...] Where'd you teach, again?
Date: 2011-03-14 03:52 am (UTC)[ Oh, now that sad smile should be more familiar. See, talking about his work too much might just be why some of his relationships didn't work out in the end.
Like father, like son, despite the fact that the two of them never even met... ]
...London. It was in London. [ He gives Dean the actual name of his university as well. A place that in his universe is world-renowned for its departments of physics and linguistics.
Sadly his mundane is presently too lazy to either look up a suitable real-life university equivalent or invent a name on the fly.[VIDEO]
Date: 2011-03-14 04:19 am (UTC)[Shrug.]
But hey, it's a classier joint than the town I grew up in. 'Least yours is a city.
[Ahhh, Lawrence, Kansas. Founded back in the day when land surveying was king and they'd worked the Midwest out into a grid system every six miles, set into blocks that blanket the earth like a quilt. Where everybody knows everybody else, and cheesy, themed motel rooms reign king.]
You got a lady back home yourself, or are you just chock-full of advice?
[If it sounds mean, or petty - it's not meant to. Dean knows a lot about most of the people he's acquainted with, here, but Phil isn't in that group.]
Date: 2011-03-14 01:12 pm (UTC)[ It's been a while, not even counting mansion time. Philip was hardly at his best the year before he left for Greenland and a relationship was more effort than he was capable of making at that time. ]
I don't.
[ The response is fairly neutral. Hardly sad, but perhaps a little... relieved?
The thought of leaving somebody behind at home for- possibly for good is not exactly a pleasant one. ]
Date: 2011-03-14 05:04 pm (UTC)Sometimes it's better.
[And sometimes it's not.]
...Hey, did I ever tell you about how I'm pretty sure I have a kid?
Date: 2011-03-14 05:13 pm (UTC)No, not yet. You think you do?
Date: 2011-03-14 05:24 pm (UTC)Sammy and I drove back through there recently, so I dropped in on Lisa, and... [He looks down to where he's folded his hands in his lap.] ...she had a son. Who was turning eight. Ben. I mean, she was probably out with other guys after me, and she says he's not mine, but she acted really weird about it.
[Dean rubs the back of his neck.] I'd let it go, but when I saw Ben with his little, ah...his hair was sorta spiked up, wearin' a black t-shirt, talking about girls and getting all torqued up about his Hot Wheels cars... [A smile.] ...reminded me of me.
Date: 2011-03-14 06:53 pm (UTC)You sound happy about that.
...But you didn't stay with her, did you?
Date: 2011-03-14 10:31 pm (UTC)Nah, we...we had to keep goin'. The case we worked - it was a bunch of murders, Ben was one of the kids involved. Lisa was grateful when we got him out safe, yeah, but... [Dean quiets, the smile on his face faltering. He turns to Phil with the slightest grimace.]
...I ain't exactly father-material, anyway.
Date: 2011-03-14 10:51 pm (UTC)[ The follow-up just slips out. Maybe it's something he shouldn't request elaboration on, but there's some genuine curiosity attached to the subject.
Philip gave becoming a father himself little thought and now his chance is gone and his own father... well, let's just say he never received a practical demonstration of what is or is not good father-material. ]
Date: 2011-03-14 11:14 pm (UTC)Dude, have you seen me? With the way I live? No chance in Hell or Heaven. I was pulled into this life by my dad, and there's no way I'd do it to my own kid. It's hard, Phil. On everyone. My own brother up and left after he graduated from high school; my dad said he'd disown 'im, but Sammy did it anyway.
Date: 2011-03-15 02:01 pm (UTC)It reminds him of something his father once said... ]
Then quit.
[ Truthfully the wording is deceiving. It's not so much a suggestion as it is Philip wondering whether that option is even available, whether it's something Dean would even consider if it was. ]
Date: 2011-03-15 02:25 pm (UTC)He never went to college.
He has no people skills.]
I don't...know how to do anything else.
Date: 2011-03-15 09:48 pm (UTC)Did you ever try?
[ It doesn't sound accusatory, but thinking about it Philip doubts that Dean would be unable to find any job whatsoever.
Now to find a job he wants to do, that is a different thing entirely... ]
Date: 2011-03-15 10:07 pm (UTC)Hell, he feels uncomfortable now, with Philip forcing him to think about things he hasn't thought about before. Grudgingly, he replies,]
...no. I did impersonate a priest for a week for a case once. Played CIA agents, FBI agents...I guess not much about me's real anyway, huh?
[Dean laughs lightly.] I'm off the system, too. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I'm dead. [GRIN.]
If you got any job choices you think I should check out, you lemme know.
Date: 2011-03-15 11:26 pm (UTC)Well, for example if she has a job I could just picture you as the perfect stay at home father.
{ }
[ On platform 3, conversation train leaving Serious Suggestions Town now. ]
Date: 2011-03-15 11:49 pm (UTC)This is the look that speaks for itself. It says:
You're lucky we're separated by a communicator or your nose would be broken.]

Date: 2011-03-16 12:10 am (UTC)So... you're officially dead. Do I even want to ask how that happened?

Date: 2011-03-16 01:27 am (UTC)2/2 This is the gayest Dean icon I own.
Date: 2011-03-16 01:33 am (UTC)Oh don't say that. You're a beautiful princess, Dean.
